This network is for route relations representing certain former alignments of U.S. Routes that have been officially designated as historic byways with accompanying signage or road markings. It does not include every historic routing of a U.S. Route. Also, it does not include every officially historic route byway in the United States. (Some states maintain similar designations for former state routes.) Most sections of former U.S. Route 66 and some sections of former U.S. Route 80 are good examples of officially designated historic byways with Historic U.S. Highway signage and markings.

To indicate that a road used to be part of a U.S. Route more generally, tag the roadway with old_ref=*. Better yet, consider contributing to OpenHistoricalMap, where you can map the U.S. Route in its original state (as well as its current state).

See United States roads tagging#U.S. Highways for detailed instructions on mapping U.S. routes.
