Tags

Applies to nodes or areas.

Tag Description
amenity=taxi Generic tag for a taxi stand.
capacity=* Maximum number of taxis that can wait here (a rough estimation is ok).
presence=* Hours and/or weekdays when you usually can expect a taxi to be present. Examples could be: 24/7, shopping hours, rarely, etc.. Again, a rough estimation is ok - if you don't know, just don't use this tag! (See also opening_hours=* for patterns to code multiple time spans.)

Both capacity and presence tags are optional.

Icon

Maybe a car symbol with the term "TAXI" somewhere. Any better ideas, especially a symbol recognized internationally?

I think it should say "TAXI" above to make it clear. Maybe capacity shown as a number to the right on the top 2 zooms? - LastGrape 23:52, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

highway=service, taxi=yes, car=no ? That is what I do with bus stations. MikeCollinson 17:19, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Makes sense! Unfortunately, the map features restrictions list says motorcar=no and taxi is not even on the page :-(, but ok, that's a different proposal and should not also be discussed here ... -- Ulfl 21:59, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
I don't think capacity is really all that useful, especially for busy stands. I've seen on more than one occasion several taxis waiting a block up the street for a spot to open at the stand proper. --Cohort 01:58, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

My idea behind the capacity was, that larger ones tend to have a taxi available, while small ones (only 1 or 2) more likely tends to be empty. Maybe something like "availability" will do the job (24/7, airport open times, only at business hours, rarely if ever, ...), but obviously this will be an estimation. BTW: I don't see, why overcrowded stands makes the capacity value useless, just because the capacity is often exceeded?!? -- Ulfl 08:16, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

amenity=taxi, a definite yes from me, I already use it. I agree that availability is a more useful criteria than capacity. As it is an estimation and may need a few words, why not use the description= tag ? I am pushing for wide use of this as I predict our slippy maps will soon have the capability to roll over a point of interest and get some more information about it using this tag. MikeCollinson 17:19, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
I'd still prefer capacity. It's the capacity that's physically there. Though it might be useful to specify the usage of a stand I doubt if a streetmap is the propper place to state the amount of taxis waiting for a spot to open. This is just too inconsistent. What about taxi-stands in front of rural stations, that are deserted except for the time a train arrives? -- Fröstel 17:29, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Thinking a bit more about it, both capacity (physical space) and availability (when will taxis usually be present) makes sense. Both are measures to give someone a better "idea" about the possibility wether a taxi is waiting for you or not. I've changed the proposal accordingly. -- Ulfl 21:59, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Yep, I like both. Outside London Victoria (UK Railway) Station there is a taxi rank of about 4, round the corner there are about 12 taxi parking spaces (waiting in line to go into the rank), round the corner again and you see more taxis in line! I don't know how that would be tagged but at least with this getting approved somebody has the option to tag it as 3 stands or 1 big one (or just tag the first one with availabilty 24/7). - LastGrape 19:18, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

May be a good thing would be to give the phone number of the taxi stand as they usually have one in Paris (I don't know if this exist in other cities): this would provide a real way to check for taxi availability as well as rent one. --Samusz 16:16, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
