Basemap

According to NHD:

A basemap provides a user with context for a map. You can add information to a basemap by overlaying other information on top of it. Basemaps contain reference information that may provide different geospatial information based on what the cartographer is trying to communicate.

Layer indexes

The Editor Layer Index (link) project maintains an index of imagery sources that may be traced in OSM.

• The iD editor derives its imagery sources from that index.[1]
• The JOSM editor maintains its own index (but can also be configured to use the editor-layer-index).
