State of the Map CR.png

State of the Map is the annual conference for the community of editors and users of OpenStreetMap. This event has a global edition that has taken place every year since 2007. It is organized by the OpenStreetMap Foundation. Similarly and using the same nomenclature, dozens of other regional and local conferences get organized every year. E.g Asia, Africa, Latin America, USA, among others. These conferences are organized by local teams that establish their own programs and activities, as well as their own means of funding.

The presence of editors and users of OpenStreetMap in different events carried out in Costa Rica is fairly high. Similarly, the impact of their collaborations is increasing and reaches different domains of action. However, there is still not a proper meeting space for them to come together as a community, or an event that would allow them to share and maximize their experiences. Therefore, the State of the Map Costa Rica Conference will be the first one of its kind to be carried out in Costa Rica.

The event's agenda will include several activities such as talks, panel sessions, workshops and mapathons. It will also feature the participation of communities of users with links to Open Data, Free Software, Open Software, Academia, Professionals, Non-Profits, Private Companies and Government Institutions.

Justification

It is considered important to organize a State of the Map Costa Conference due to the following reasons:

  • In order to create community, to get to know each other, to recognize and acknowledge our current projects.
  • In order to co-create a common knowledge base for the use of OpenStreetMap in Costa Rica, in regards to:
    • Nomenclature to be followed and mapping rules decision making.
    • Revision and update of the Costa Rican OSM Wiki.
    • Geospatial data for decision making.

It is also suggested to discuss ways to relate this work with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. Some of the goals this conference can leverage are:

  • 5 - Gender Equality
  • 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation
  • 10 - Reduced Inequalities
  • 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • 13 - Climate Action
