FIT or Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer is a file format used for GPS tracks and routes. It is used by newer Garmin fitness GPS devices, including the Edge and Forerunner.

Since September 2023, a "FIT" plugin is available for JOSM, allowing to open these files directly in JOSM.

Alternatively, it can be converted to GPX format.

  • GPSBabel version 1.4.4 and later can convert from FIT to GPX. In the GUI it is listed as "Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer (FIT) Activity filefit". From the command line:
gpsbabel -i garmin_fit -f YYYY-MM-DD-HH-mm-SS.fit -o gpx -F YYYY-MM-DD-HH-mm-SS.gpx
  • Or you can download into Garmin BaseCamp, Garmin Training Center or Garmin Connect, then export as GPX. Or you can use the online converter on Gpsies.com.
  • fit2gpx can convert to GPX one at a time or as a group:
java -jar fit2gpx.jar --statistic <file Garmin .FIT> [[<file Garmin .FIT>] …]
