Kerala/Grants/HOTBoosterGrant2023/Proposal/Mapping Mangroves in the Northern Kerala (Kannur and Kasargod) Districts.
Your project
The mangroves are said to be the kidneys of the oceans and play a vital role in the growth and sustainability of an area. While the Kerala state is considered we can say that the Northern part is rich and diverse in the Mangroves. The mapping regarding the same is studied and done in a minor way is the major concern that the brainchild idea of this project aroused. After the Highway extension work started it noted that most of the mangrove ecosystem is destroyed and various anthropogenic activities lead to the plight of this ecosystem. The mapping data that we now follow is very old and needs to be updated and this initiative and the social outcome of creating new mappers, especially with special emphasis on women and children will lead to a new avenue in the mapping sector. The project emphasizes mainly the participatory Resource Mapping (PRM) which will open an inclusivity in all creeds. The result of the Project can be used for future research, and conservation aspects can be raised to the Biodiversity Management committees and the Local Self Government departments and authorities so that the idea of creating awareness and saving the ecosystem can be done to an extent and we can overcome many natural calamities there by the ecological services can be rejuvenated.
Describe the local challenge your project is addressing
The project mainly addresses the change in distribution of the mangroves in the Northern part of Kerala especially in the Kannur and Kasargod Districts. The change had occurred due to developmental activities and this has fueled the climate change also. The idea of conserving them and giving awareness to the public domain on the change and thereby podcasting the data to the authorities and making them realize the issue and the after-effects of the same. The data has to be circulated among the common people and making them aware of the change is another issue that we address in this project. The data will act as a great facilitator for the research community. The major issue of these kinds of scientific studies is that these kinds of data are available to the common man and they are still unaware of these technicalities and the study
Describe your project
OBJECTIVES · The study will help to analyze the change that happened in the mangrove ecosystem. · The creation of new mappers will lead to a new era in mapping study; the new mappers will be mainly women and students so a social change can be initiated. · The data created will be an eye-opener to the research sector. · The idea of social awareness especially in the conservation sector will be given more emphasis by connecting the Local Self Governments, BMCs, NGOs, etc. · The data can be used for further studies and analysis. · The idea of change in the attitude of people can be generated by the podcast of the data. · The project will act as a facilitator for the various other departments especially the Fisheries, Tourism, etc. for further conservation, economic, or aesthetic-related ones.
Describe your sustainability plan
The post-funding work will mainly focus on the training of the community with special emphasis given to the women and student communities and thereby creating a new era of change in the mapping sector. The partnership with the NGOs will open the channel to social inclusivity. The maps and data will be a scaffolder for the research community. The field GPS Traces and Photographs will be uploaded to the OSM, Mapilary, and Wikimedia Commons.
What are your community-defined project goals, and how do you define project success?
COMMUNITY-DEFINED PROJECT GOALS · To create new mappers and thereby flourish and expand the sector to common people. · To empower the backward community, especially the women by training them in the field of mapping. · The research community can utilize this data and they can up bring this data for future endeavors. · The data available in the open platform will reach out to each social stratum of society. · The new era of participatory resource mapping will bring social change in all sectors.
The success of the project is when the data is open to all communities thereby resulting in sector conservation, creating awareness, etc., and the participatory resource mapping (PRS) will be among the common people, and that too in a gender-inclusive way will result in a plethora of changes in their life. The Local Self Government Departments and other Government entities can utilize this data for future developmental aspects and thereby the new developmental projects will be considered on the conservation aspects also, this way the project will modulate the socio-economic strata of the society.

Partnerships
Successful applications will demonstrate one or more partnerships with a local data user. Priority will be given to applications for which the data has been requested by a partnering organisation, or where the partner organisation has expressed interest in collecting the data for a specific use or intervention. Example partners include local non-government organisations (NGOs), community based organisations (CBOs), local governments, companies, universities, schools, and other academic institutions.
Describe who will use your data
Local Self Governments, Conservation Groups, NGOs, Researchers
The fruit bearers of the data will be a large community. The Local Self Government can take this piece of information for conservation as well as the unhidden aesthetics can be used to the tourism sector, thereby the socio-economic change can be initiated through the people participatory approach leading to the creation of the community reserves. The research community is the major core group that can use this data and explore the hidden gems in these mangroves ecosystems. The data can be also used by the NGO’s, Conservation Groups etc.
