About your Mapping Community

Tell us a little bit about your mapping community at the moment, some examples of details to include are below, but please provide us with any information you think is relevant. Please write 100-200 words

OSM Kosovo is the community of OSM editors working on mapping Kosovo.

FLOSSK, which sponsors OSM Kosovo, for the past year has been working on the project “OpenStreetMap Kosovo: Developing geographic information systems and skills in Kosovo”, which started in June 2019 and is expected to be completed by this month.

During the project, professional GIS trainings have been organized, MoUs were signed with municipalities for future cooperation and opening of geographical data, as well as with Kosovo Cadastral Agency from which we have secured street names, municipal boundaries, cadastral zones and settlement points which have been made available to OSM Kosovo community..

For the community we have organized meet-ups, invited local and foreign companies and individuals to present to the audience and OSM GEO-Week. Organized offline and online mapathons, and now at this time together with an after-school program, we have been organizing mapathons with high schools.

We have expanded the community, making 10k+ edits in OpenStreetMap. Organized a 3-day conference dedicated to GIS and OSM (State of Map Southeast Europe) with over 150 participants and speakers in October 2019. We are in the final phase of creating the OSM Kosovo chapter, building a chapter website and visual identity.

What do you need the grant money for?

We want to understand what you plan to buy, how much you plan to buy, and why this will help you to scale your community mapping efforts. There are two tables for you to fill in your response, and you may add more rows as needed. Some examples are in the table for your reference. You are welcome to use a different format in your response, but please make sure to include these details.

Twelve mapathons are planned to be organized with high school students to map their settlements. This will be done in cooperation with ASSET (an afterschool activity project that aims to develop employability and entrepreneurial skills in youth and a positive attitude to their future http://asset-ks.org/ ).

We will divide settlements through maproulette. The young people engaged in mapathons will have their activity counted as volunteer hours in the government scheme.

In the end of the project we will organize an OpenStreetMap awards ceremony, in which we will handle prizes for 5 best map editors of this project.

Through this initiative we believe that we can grow our community in different cities. We already have an active community in the capital of Kosovo, Prishtina, but involving other municipalities broadens our community, raises diversity and expands local knowledge.

We are aware of the challenges that we might face such as the motivation of youngsters to be part of the community, to contribute continuously and not briefly, but based on our previous experiences with this kind of projects and cooperation with ASSET we are very optimistic that with specific targets we will make a difference.
