Purpose

The map is the outcome of discutions on the main forum of romanian motorcycle users, to have a map where the real state of the roads is shown. Due to different maintenance practices(from lazy to really good) of road administration departments from county to county, roads with same administrative level(e.g. highway=primary) can have very different level of travel comfort, so administrative level of the road can be used only as an approximation when planning a longer trip. This map should also contain routes for enduro trips, not specific for normal maps.

A sister-map for cars exists too, obtained just applying a slightly different smoothness matrix(see below).

OSM database access

The Motorcycle map is using in read-only mode the following parameters from the OSM database to depict real state of roads.

"surface" - as it is currently described in Wiki

"smoothness" - as it is currently described in Wiki

After the present debates will settle, we will follow and comply after a transition period.

"lanes" - as it is currently described in Wiki

"surface_survey" - this is a tag introduced by us as a "last update date + who made the surface survey + a few extra words about the road"

The data input is coming from two ways: a dedicated thread on the motorcycle forum where the motorcycle riders share their impressions after their trips, contributing with data; On the map there is a "Report" submission button which is used to report road condition. Data is collected from this two source and it is entered manually with josm and potlatch, until now it wasn't an overhelming job.

Color-matrix

The pattern of each road is obtained by combining the color obtained from smoothness-matrix with the shape obtained from surface matrix + thickness of the line.

Color codes correspond to the following evaluated speeds:

Color Speed
120 km/h
100 km/h
80 km/h
60 km/h
40 km/h
impossible

Thickness is simple -

if("lanes">2) then {thick line}
else {thin line}
