Maps can be purchased (U.S. and UK are free of charge) from Navmii and stored locally on the device.
Navmii is a London based company. The app launched for the UK & Ireland first, but is now also available for the U.S. Maps for Europe can be purchased by country. You have to download full sets of data (a whole country) provided by Navmii, even if you need only a small part.

There's a bug reporting mode. Not clear if these are feeding back to OSM somehow.
The Navmii website describes this feature as "Integrated Map Report Tool: Easily send map errors from within Navfree to enable of the OpenStreetMap community to fix & improve the map!"
The Navfree user forum has a question regarding this, which features a reply from a Navmii employee stating "Presently it is true that the feedback reports from Navmii end up in an inaccessable database... But its not a black hole - The contents of the database have been handed over to OSM" but there are no details of this process.
