Project Description

The aim of this project is to map as accurately as possible the city of Rome, from its foundation in the year 753 BC until the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD.

Overview

The city of Rome is at the origin of Roman civilization and was one of the most important metropolises of classical antiquity, with an estimated population of one million inhabitants between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.

The mapping of the city is based on research carried out by historians which has allowed us to reconstruct the topography of imperial and pre-imperial Rome.

Notes

  • Sometimes different sources contradict each other regarding the exact location of buildings or minor roads.
  • Most of the buildings have no certain end date as they were slowly dismantled during the Middle Ages.
