Scripted imports and automated edits should only be carried out by those with experience and understanding of the way the OpenStreetMap community creates maps, and only with careful planning and consultation with the local community. The most practicable way to import (many) POIs seems to be as follows:
- Convert your file containing the POIs (for example a gpx file) to osm-format using a conversion tool
- Load the osm-file into JOSM
- Tag the POIs in JOSM
- Upload the changes to OSM with JOSM
(This way of POI-upload does not require the circumstantial step to upload POIs as track points and redraw them.)
