The Static Maps API is just one of several OSM implementations of the static map images idea.

Development

This was developed by Pawel Niechoda as a Google Summer of Code/2009 Project, and development (or at least maintenance) is ongoing (timeline)

There is a google code page for this project with Source code there. The source is also bundled as one of the zipped up download from GSoC
