This feature has been labeled as deprecated. The recommended replacement is: a lifecycle prefix such as key:disused:*, key:abandoned:* or key:construction:*, or in some cases a lifecycle tag such as key:disused=*, key:abandoned=*, key:construction=*.
The reason is documented in Deprecated features. You are still free to continue to use or interpret this tag as you see fit since OpenStreetMap does not have “banned features”.
Under no circumstances should you (semi-)automatically change “deprecated” tags to something else in the database on a large scale without conforming to the automated edits code of conduct. Any such change will be reverted.

It is now preferred to use a Lifecycle prefix such as disused:*=*, abandoned:*=* or construction:*=*, or in some cases a lifecycle tag such as disused=*, abandoned=*, construction=*

This tag is an example of trolltag.

See also Comparison_of_life_cycle_concepts.

Some operational_status=* were proposed in abandoned Proposed_features/Tag:operational_status but this tag does not appear there.
