I am pretty sure, that the maxbogieweight is actually the maximum tandem axle weight, see this road sign:

Denmark road sign C36.svg

There are two indicators that speak for this:

  1. The English Wikipedia article for Bogie exclusively shows pictures of tandem axles in the article.
  2. The places where the tag is currently used most, according to taginfo (except that odd blob in the middle of Russia) coincides mostly with the countries shown in this table on Wikipedia about European street signs (Search for "Maximum weight per tandem axle"): The sign is apparently only known throughout Scandinavia, Estonia and Romania

Apparently I was mistaken in thinking that "bogie" is just another term for "axle". (When I first encountered this page, all it contained was "???".) Thank you for the correction; I'll fix the articles accordingly. Tandem axle weight restrictions are also found in some U.S. states like Ohio and Texas:

Axis number

There is no show how to indicate the load in the case of a different number of axles.

Example (RU): http://gkhb.cap.ru/Content/photo/201802/19/Albom264712/slajd3.jpg

Translation:

  • maximum weight 5t
  • maximum axle load 4t
  • maximum axle load for a two-axle bogie 3t
  • maximum axle load for a three-axle bogie 2t

There is a suggestion to write:

  • maxweight=5
  • maxaxleload=4
  • maxbogieweight:2=3
  • maxbogieweight:3=2
