supervised vs. operator

If we have tag "operator", why "supervisor" is needed? "operator=" already means that the object is managed, controlled, maintained. --Surly 05:26, 18 August 2010 (BST)

Let me give some examples:
  • A lollipop crossing is not operated by a company or corporation (it is on a public road). The supervisors (crossing guards) are often volunteers who are spending their free time to make the crossing safer for children.
  • Railway level crossings are operated by the operator of the railway, but I don't know of any other way to distinguish level crossings with automatic and manual gates.
  • A parking lot may be operated by a theme park, but may be unguarded.
  • On the one hand, a public, natural beach (i.e. operated by nobody) may have a coast guard paid by the government or by the municipality. On the other hand, a private beach may be operated by a hotel resort, but may have no life guard.
  • A toilet operated by a company may have no cleaners who are present all the time. --Head 08:30, 18 August 2010 (BST)
Good! It's useful tag. --Surly 15:21, 18 August 2010 (BST)

Proposal?

This page was created rather recently. Is it proposal? If no, why you document a tag without proposal? I have not seen this tag widely adopted. --Surly 05:34, 18 August 2010 (BST)

I've made it a proposal. --Head 10:24, 18 August 2010 (BST)

Implied supervision

If the place has opening_hours and is set supervised=yes, it is implied that it is supervised while it is open.

This is not generally corrected. There are beach resorts (leisure=beach_resort) that have extended opening time (e.g. till late in the night), but the lifeguard service is limited to daily time or even short. --FabC 07:53, 18 August 2011 (BST)

I would suggest to set service_hours=* for the supervised periods. Lulu-Ann
I like the Lulu-Ann idea, but I would change "service:hours" to "supervision:hours" in order to be clear that the time is related to the supervisor's activities and not to any other service offered by the site (example service:bicycle:rental=yes). --FabC 09:29, 19 August 2011 (BST)
I would like to have the service_hours on the node of the supervisers tower if for the supervision and on the node of the bicycle rental shed for the bicycle rental and on the node of the chapel for the church service. Let's not invent a new tag for each service item that might appear only to have it on the same object. Remember each offline routing device would need to know all tags to show the service hours! Lulu-Ann
You misunderstood the sentence. In the case which you described, you would tag it as e.g. opening_hours=08:00-23:00, supervised=08:00-18:00. I have amended the examples for clarification. --Head (talk) 18:50, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
