Old (pre-September 2013) discussion

I think this should be something like musical_instruments. shop=trumpet is very arbitrary like shop=strawberry_cake. --LayBack 09:37, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

I'd second this proposal - "trumpet" is a silly tag. --Flint 17:13, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
I third it. As much as I love the trumpet, it's hardly the right name. EAi 02:29, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Trumpet sounds more like a suggestion to how it should be rendered, in that case I go for guitar. I support shop=musical_instruments --Skippern 13:42, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
Moved (from "Proposed features/trumpet") No idea who originally wanted to tag a trumpet shop though. Alexrudd 02:58, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah. Why did LayBack create a page talking about shop=trumpet, stating that this would be very arbitrary. Confusing.
Anyway we seem to be having a discussion without anything to discuss, so I'm going to copy the contents of Tag:shop=musical_instrument (created 08:57, 28 July 2010 by User:Jacopogg83) onto this page. So this becomes the proposal for that (perhaps prematurely) documented tag
-- Harry Wood 14:33, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

I propose the folowing tag for specify the istruments tat are selling:

shop=musical_instruments
shop:specialism=*

like

shop:specialism=trumpet
shop:specialism=grand_piano

--Josias 14:33, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

At the time Josias wrote that, the proposed tag was not actually stated on this page, however the proposed tag is now stated as shop=musical_instrument. Singular, as is the convention. -- Harry Wood 14:33, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

On the Proposed features/Music it was suggested shop=music, type=musical_instrument could be used. Neither proposal page has been written properly though. -- Harry Wood 15:32, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Yesterday rewrote Proposed features/Music myself since nobody else did it. On the first pass I included musical instrument shops encompassed within that tag, but... -- Harry Wood 14:33, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
I've rewritten to avoid conflict with this tag. shop=music proposal now does not encompass musical instruments -- Harry Wood 14:35, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

For some reason Tag:shop=musical_instrument is currently shown on Map Features Key:shop listing, but Tag:shop=music is not -- Harry Wood (talk) 00:22, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

We are currently going through hundreds of map features and tags for preparing the next release of Keypad-Mapper 3. While doing that we found, that for SHOPS some tag values are singular and others are plural. We think that the PLURAL is the better choice if a product type is used like baby_goods, music_instruments, hearing_aids whereas the SINGULAR is used for a name of a profession like butcher or optician. This is also the current situation shown here http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_features#Shop with some exceptions like music_instrument. We are sure, that the main reason, that the singular was used more often than the plural for music_instrument is, that most mappers accept what is written on the page mentioned above as common consent, even if it is not logical. We therefore oppose the suggestion to use SINGULAR for music_instrument and will implement PLURAL in the Keypad-Mapper 3 --Markus59 (talk) 08:41, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your comment. I personally don't have a strong opinion on singular versus plural, but I believe that any standard is better than no standard. The outcome of the vote shows that the community prefers the singular form, so this is what I will document. Math1985 (talk) 09:03, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
