About

The Geo YouthMappers is a voluntary mapping community at Makerere University in Uganda. It was formed in 2017 with the aim of using open geospatial technologies for humanitarian cause. The chapter aims at increasing access to geospatial information in the local communities within Kampala, and to a broader extent, the entire country through the Open Street Map.

The Chapter is mainly composed of students pursing the Bachelors of Science in Land Surveying and Geomatics program.

Open Street Mapping Training with Mgahinga Community Development Organisation in Kisoro district, South Western Uganda To train the staff of the NGO on how they can use Open Street Mapping in their activities -The staff members were trained on remote mapping using the iD Editor, and introduced to basics of Multi criteria decision analysis -The iD Editor

Mapping As a guide to Pro-Poor water, sanitation and hygiene planning To build the GIS field capacity of the chapter members through mapping of water, sanitation, and hygiene indicators to be uploaded on the OpenStreetMap -To map all categories of clean water sources in the study area using point of interest (POI) technique of field data collection.

The Spotlight Kampala Project in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley and Arizona State University Illuminating Energy Access Inequities in informal urban settlements -To fill the gap in the understanding of energy access in informal urban settlements by performing a multidimensional survey of energy access - including access, reliability, quality, affordability, and safety - in the nearly 30 informal communities in the city of Kampala, Uganda with wider generalizability across Sub-Saharan African cities. -Kobol Toolbox

The Kasese Disaster Mapping Project The Project is an initiative of the Geo YouthMappers Chapter at Makerere University, aimed at mapping the high flood risk Kasese district of Uganda through a series of Mapathons. It is also aimed at training new student mappers. -The project aims at building the capacity of the Geo YouthMappers Chapter at Makerere University through training new student mappers and offering them the incredible opportunity to participate in real world projects, so that they realize the contribution of their work towards humanitarian cause and or creating resilient communities. -The TeachOSM Tasking Manager 01/11/2022 Proposed
