Turkey road network

The purpose of this page is for documenting and explaining the proposal on the standardization of mapping on Turkish road networks. For more information about classification and tagging of Turkish roads, see Tr:Key:highway and Tr:Turkey roads tagging.
This proposal/proposed guideline does not necessarily follow the proposal process.
Tagging and creating road route relations
- Planned and proposed ways will be removed from route relations, unless specifically denoted by a non-route relation which will include such parts.
- Asian Highways are properly added, which was already mapped on some roads and despite being unsigned as opposed to E-Roads; they are mapped as unsigned_ref=*
- "Motorways in Turkey" and "E-Roads in Turkey" relations are removed. New network relations can be created, but note that there's a controversy over it. Such new relations shall only include route relations.
Motorways
- Motorway links shall not be included in motorway relations unless required to do so (i.e. connections at the start and the end of motorway)
- Names shall be standardized, which means that ways belonging to the motorway should only consist of its common name (Kuzey Marmara Otoyolu, Adana-Erdemli Otoyolu, Ankara Çevre Yolu, Anadolu Otoyolu...) Note that some of the motorways may include separate names despite being classified under the same motorway reference (İzmir-Aydın Otoyolu vs. Aydın Çevre Yolu)
- Route relations shall be denoted by network=TR:motorway
State roads
- Route relations, including its subrelations, shall be denoted by network=TR:national
- When there is no special/boulevard naming available, naming of the road sections should be based on sections between province centers and subdistrict-level towns (Adana-Mersin Yolu, Ankara-Ayaş Yolu)
- Mapping road sections should be done without being mapped as a reference, but instead as a subrelation of state roads; i.e. D400-01. Here is an example.
- Mapping references should be done without spaces, strokes or dots; such as D400, D100, ... as this is what most map suppliers do and as most people are familiar with either D400 or D-400. The official notation should have been with the dot as is for E-roads, but even the KGM (General Directorate of Roads) doesn't use it, instead relying on a mix of spaces, non-spaces and strokes on its reports and announcements.
Provincial roads
- Route relations shall be denoted by network=TR:provincial:(two-digit provincial number). There had, as of January 2024, only been a few examples of provincial road relations.
Mechanical edits
Mechanical edits are semi-automatically done by mappinglander on JOSM within a supposed timeframe of three weeks, manually checked in order to avoid any broken relations; which is important given that many state roads do not run concurrently and separated as sections.
