== MAPPING PROJECTS ==

Jomokela Kennedy started contributing to OpenStreetMap in 2017 after attending a mapping working at Bongo Hive in Lusaka. He has been an active member of a local community for the last four years in Lusaka where he is currently serving as Operations Manager in Lusaka. He has participated in different local community project as follows;

Local Impact Governance Project in Zambia

Kennedy is the current Senior Mapping Super for the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team on the ongoing service delivery mapping project in Zambia. The USAID Local Impact Governance Project will help Zambia build up a sub-national system of governance for devolved service delivery that is more responsive to citizen needs. The program will engage national and sub-national authorities to expand the capabilities of district-level governance bodies to deliver sustainable development outcomes, increase effective citizen and private-sector involvement in development planning and monitoring, and improve public financial management and domestic revenue generation.

In 2022, Kennedy is the Associate project manager for the project in which he was a team lead for field teams in 18 Districts both in Central and Muchinga Provinces. He is supervising a team of seven (7) field supervisors conducting field data training and collection activities, to response to app installation and app troubleshooting. In this project, he has managed to prepare field budgets, record keeping for expenses and reconciliation against the budget for the 18 districts respectively. Kennedy was involve in the inception phase in which he was required to attend consultative workshop with key stakeholders and line ministries to better determine the best to reduce on budget costs and maximum productivity and achieve project goals and objectives. He was part of the team preparing work plan for the project overview as well as field data collection programs. Kennedy has written over 18 reports for the respective district for data collection training and field outcomes. He is response for creation of field data collection forms in Microsoft Excel and managing forms on OpenDataKit Server to clean and analyse data as it is uploaded to the server. Kennedy has generated over 276 static maps, 400 story maps in Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) for the Local government to support in the Integrated Development Planning (IDP) documents. Furthermore, he has produced 18 atlases for the 18 districts for easier presentation of the work.

Mapping Peri-Urban Areas

In 2017 Kennedy was given another opportunity to contribute to OpenStreetMap community as an Enumerator. During this project the OSM Zambia community mapped the capital Lusaka in three peri-urban areas (Chawama, Chazanga and Kanyama). This project was very vital as there was an outbreak Cholera in Lusaka the capital of Zambia. Over 70,000 buildings were been added to the map. The open geospatial data created is being freely-accessed by the Ministry of Local Government to help gazette and close swallow wells as a control measure during the outbreak and various local authorities that are using OSM data for town planning and development initiatives.

Rural Electrification Project

Kennedy participated as a mapping supervisor in 2018. The Overall national electricity access rate was 31%. (47% in urban and peri-urban areas, and only 4% in rural areas). Government of Zambia Vision 2030 sets ambitious targets – 90% for urban and peri-urban areas and 51% for rural areas by 2030. This project was there to encourage private sector participation in developing off-grid/mini-grid solutions, data is needed to support investment decisions With support from IFC, HOT mapped over 500,000 buildings and surveyed 200 villages south of Lusaka to characterize demand/ability & willingness to pay.

Women Connect Challenge: Empowering Women AND Girl to Create Gendered Data about issues Affecting their Lives

In 2019, Kennedy was a field project lead on this project. He was a link between government authority Ministry of Health to make sure all procedure were followed and the enumerator had all materials to ensure a smooth process. OpenStreetMap Zambia in the Women Connect Challenge focused on mapping gender based violence (GBV) and sexual reproductive health services (SRH) so as to popularize them and increase uptake. I was responsible for training data collectors, analyzing the data and then upload.

Mapping Solid Waste Zones in Lusaka

Kennedy was a project lead in this project in 2020. Solid waste management has been a challenge for the Lusaka authorities due to the peri-urban areas’ over-population. According to the LCC, the peri-urban areas generate 70% of the city’s solid waste, and half of it remains uncollected. Most of these areas are too big for effective collection of solid waste, and there is a lack of GIS data of these areas that would facilitate developing solutions. OSM Zambia, aimed to address this by generating data zones that will help in planning and inspection of waste collection in six of the city’s peri-urban areas. The wards of Lusaka are very large and need to be divided into solid waste collection zones to be managed. This helped the Lusaka City Council (LCC) to efficiently plan solid waste interventions and systems in the city.

Indoor Residue Spraying

During his university, Kennedy had massive desire to contributing to the community. In 2016 he was given that opportunity to participate in an Indoor Residue Spraying exercise as a spray operator with the Ministry of Health in Siavonga District with technical support from Akros. Due to his commitment and dedication to work, he was tasked to a more supervisory position and leading a team of spray operators and digitizing using a smart tablet.
