Introduction

About 5 years ago I wrote some instructions to set up a tile server based on these repositories.

That style still works with Ubuntu 21.10, but the setup is now much easier, because many of the required components are built in to recent versions of Ubuntu (and Debian).

Process

Follow the switch2osm instructions for Ubuntu 21.04 (they also work for 21.10). That will automatically create a "_renderd" account for use by the rendering daemon,

Then, at the "Loading data" stage, head over to here and follow those instructions from there, using the account name "_renderd" instead of "renderaccount".

One drawback of using the OS version of mod_tile is that it only supports zoom levels up to 20, as opposed to the "zoom" branch mentioned at [1].
