In my home town there are four mappings of industrial=*, one node, three closed ways. Values are: printing, bakery, depot, grinding_mill

I miss grinding_mill in your list. it has lots of uses. I might add product=flour to the local mapping.

Curiously, the bakery node has industrial=* as top level tag. Why? Because there is no other top level tag attached.

There are more industrial facilities here. Nobody seems to care mapping them. E.g. one makes cast/forged metal products and one produces ceramics (not a brickworks) at industrial scale, I rather not tag a craft there. There is one mapped in the city, these do not compare. --Hungerburg (talk) 12:34, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Grinding mill actually has over 34,000 uses and this makes it the second most used value. However, I was very sceptical about this, as ~33,000 of those uses are from a data import in Uganda, Africa. Problem is that de facto all those imported establishments are far away from fitting into "industrial" (they are extremely small, many seem to not even be within buildings from aerial images), if, they should be a craft. However, the rest of the usage seems to be industrial, so I have replaced "flour_mill" with "grinding mill".
Well, the reason why so few of those few industrial facilities are mapped -not just where you are, basically over the entire world- is because the documentation on how to actually map those facilities is so poor. There is only a very limited selection of values aviable, the majority of industrial establishments do not fit into those,there is no reliable documentation. Craft

I do not understand why craft is so prominently described. Why is scale not mentioned? Is the distinction harder than what I think? --Hungerburg (talk) 12:40, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Found one mapped craft - https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/4964011230 - they are mostly in automotive supply, also they produce 70% of world market ski-edges. If that is not industry? --Hungerburg (talk) 16:50, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

I added it this way, because many "industrial" areas i've seen often include more establishments which better fit into craft=*, instead of industrial=*. Also, the craft key is in contrast to the industrial key pretty well documented. But I agree, it could be featured less prominently.
This example which you provided seems to be a (pretty large) factory, and craft=* is wrong. I'd say, craft=metal_construction is for a craftsmen's workshop, who works with metal. I would tag this establishment as "man_made=works, industrial=metal_processing and product=ski-edges;<list here which automotive parts>".
"craft" was probably used, because no documented alternative exists/existed. Hiausirg (talk) 13:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Metal Production and Processing - no category for rolling mills or pipe mills

There are a good number of metal processing plants that receive steel profiles from steel mills and process them to produce other steel shapes - the most common examples are rolling mills that receive slabs and produce steel sheet/coil, and pipe mills that produce pipe/tube.

Under the proposed `steel_mill` tag, these two descriptions would cover integrated facilities that produce steel *and* also have those facilities, but specifically exclude separate facilities:

5) making steel and manufacturing shapes (e.g., bar, plate, rod, sheet, strip, wire); (6) making steel and forming pipe and tube;

And they also don't fall under `metal_processing`, as that description mentions "fabricated metal products" - I wouldn't consider steel sheet/coil to be a fabricated product:

Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing fabricated metal products.

I think it's correct that they are excluded from `steel_mill`. With a broader description they could fit under `metal_processing`, but that would then mean everything from a rolling mill to an aluminium can plant would fall under the same category, which might be a bit broad. --Danny252 (talk) 08:06, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Agree - I suggest to use more specific subtags to better define that, such as industrial=steel_mill+steel_mill=integrated/rolling_mill etc. Hiausirg (talk) 08:03, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
