The kayak=* tag is a water access tag specifically for  kayaks. It is a subtag of canoe=*, which encompasses kayaks alongside canoes and similar paddlecraft.

When to use

Use the kayak=* tag in cases where kayak access is explicitly different from canoe access. This may be a rule or regulation set by a landowner or public agency. This situation is highly uncommon in most jurisdictions.

Don't use the kayak=* tag to restrict access based on the assumed characteristics of kayaks versus canoes. There are kayaks that can do everything a canoe can do, and vice versa, so we can't assume practical differences between them. Instead, individually tag waterway conditions (like depth, whitewater, tidal, etc.)
