CIF refers to the Customer Identification File, a set of data maintained by the rail industry in the United States to store information about railway customers and their locations.[1]. The Railinc Corporation maintains the ID numbers for these locations, which this tag is used to store.
Description
CIF numbers identify railway locations. They can be looked up at Serving Carrier Reciprocal Switch (SCRS) Inquiry.
The CIF number is the 13 character, Rail Industry Customer Identification Number assigned to a company name and industrial street address in the city, state or province where it is physically located (not the headquarters or invoicing location unless it is the same as the physical address). The CIF consists of 9-digit D&B D-U-N-S ® Number for that location followed by four (4) zeros. If instead of 4 zeros, the 9-digits are followed by another numeric suffix, that suffix identifies a sub-location within the primary location.
