Mapping Jahangirpuri & Bhalswa, New Delhi, India
In the end of the year 2022 the Médecins Sans Frontières team in New Delhi decided that it was needed to improve OpenStreetMap in Jahangirpuri & Bhalswa. The two areas were poorly mapped and improved maps would be of great help to the activities of the MSF team working in the two areas.
MSF got in touch with an active New Delhi mapper who is currently improving OpenStreetMap in the areas with help of community health workers as a local guide.
Contact
The person within MSF who is responsible for this organised editing activity is Jorieke (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.) please do contact her with any questions.
Community Consultation
MSF reached out to several mapping groups and contacts in India to find local mappers in Delhi, thanks to HOT a contact was found. Before starting the activity, details of the mapping were discussed between the mapper and the MSF team.
Timeframe
The mapping activities started in February 2023 and will continue into the spring of 2023.
Tools
Standard OSM tools will be used. Most of the mapping will be done with help of Vespucci. Data collection of landmarks will also be done with Organic Maps.
JOSM will be used to do additional editing and data quality control.
Participants
Our core team consists of the following OSM users:
- Contrapunctus (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
- UKK115 (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
- Jorieke (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
Measuring our Success
Success will be a complete mapping of the block/colony boundaries of Jahangirpuri and Bhalswa as local people are using them.
Additional work is done on mapping the road network and points of interest. Within the set timeframe it will be impossible to map all streets, addresses and points of interest, but the expected result is still a seriously improvement of the map in the two areas.
Training/Instructions
A half day training in Organic Maps was given to the local MSF team. The team received a two-pager as reference.
Data quality control
The core team will review the data as mapped in the area as the mapping is progressing and will apply corrections where necessary. All data collection will be done by the three accounts listed above. The UKK115 (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.) account might be used by multiple persons, since the login is set as default in Organic Maps on the MSF smartphones.
Results
All results will of course be found on OpenStreetMap!
