  • After getting over my kneejerk British grumble about it being "our game", I agree that it would be good to just ban the use of this word entirely and I'll stick to soccer! (sigh) TomChance 09:19, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Excellent! Same "our game" feelings but it is an extremely confusing tag internationally. This and the terrible highway=unsurfaced are my pet peeves. An ex-pat Brit - MikeCollinson 13:12, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
  • don't worry guys, i had to get over that before i proposed it. very painful, i know. we could always change soccer to association football, if that helps.... Myfanwy 04:04, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
same thing. soccer is abbreviation/mangling of association football Myfanwy 01:45, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Soccer is valid maybe in USA, but in Europe it is football, calling it anything else is wrong.--Walley 20:56, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
yes, unfortunately if i say football in australia it means aussie rules or rugby league, depending on the area i'm in. in the us it means gridiron, and so on and so on. soccer is unambiguous everywhere. if i say soccer to someone in manchester, england, he may well cringe at the word, but he will know exactly what i mean. so will anyone else, in any country. if we keep football, how do you propose we distinguish? and soccer is valid in a lot more places than usa - it's common in far east, australia, new zealand, south america, africa. we need to ditch the euro-centric viewpoint, it's narrow-minded and won't help us expand. please back up your assertion with some evidence - something relevant in the context of osm Myfanwy 01:45, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

I think this was brought up elsewhere, but why not have something like sport=football+ football:type=* (with values "association", "rugby", "aussie", "gridiron", etc.)? (P.S. I'm from the U.S. and have no problem handling the fact that "football" does not mean the same thing everywhere) --Hawke 22:57, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

  • Soccer please. Keep it simple for map editing and there is more chance that people will get it right. Don't use two tags when one will do. Malcolm Boura 19:46, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
  • What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. I do however object the arguments: The fact on the countries/continents where the term soccer is used is just an arbitrary statistic, not an argument for decision. It could just as well be replaced by a fact about where the sport was invented and what it was called back then, or which continent holds the most world-cup records, or the term the FIFA uses for the sport (football by the way). We could even hold a competition to see how many facts we can find supporting each term and then use the term with the most facts pleading for it. In the end it is just a matter of "it is as it is and changing only takes time rather than delivering improvement". --znoob 16:54, 24 September 2010 (BST)
