  • May I suggest withdrawing this and use amenity=cafe instead, perhaps with a cuisine=teahouse to describe a type of establishment common in your country? Click on the tags to see more info. amenity=cafe amenity=restaurant amenity=fast_food already exist. In previous discussions, we have found having as few categories as possible is best. It is fairly hard to draw a line between cafe and a restaurant. It is very, very hard to draw a line between a tea house or coffee shop that sells light meals and a cafe that serves tea and coffee. Also a Tea Shop in the UK is rather different to a Tea Shop in Japan, so there is a lot of national variation. MikeCollinson 17:50, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
    1. I'm not the one who proposed the "Teahouse" to be added to the amenity tags but I assume he is also czech :-). Here in czech republic is a teahouse ("čajovna") much different phenomenon than a cafe. I.e. people who usually go to the teahouse usually don't go to the cafe or vice versa (or at least not for the same purpose). The teahouses look very "alternative", you mostly hear a world music there. Also in a teahouse one trinks much slower, many go there rather in the evening or in the night. I would definitely say it should have it's own tag. I don't know however how is it in other countries, I assume that at least in some eastern-european countries the situation may be simillar. -- Butrus butrus 19:27, 29 April 2011 (BST)
    1. I'm really new here, so excuse me, if my comments are misplaced, but I totally agree with Butrus_butrus and Malenki. I wanted to mark a teahouse on the map and was shocked that there's no straightforward way to do this. amenity=teahouse would be ideal for my purpose. The establishment I was about to describe has nothing to do with cafe. And, yes, I'm from Czech Republic as well. -- Miroslav Franc 14:00, 14 December 2014 (CET)
    • +1 for withdrawing and replacing with amenity=cafe cuisine=teahouse (or maybe tea_house or tea_room). There's just no need to add yet another tag for this, the same reason we don't need e.g. amenity=ice_cream --Skquinn (talk) 07:58, 9 May 2017 (UTC)
    • I oppose the recommendation of Ewmjc. A teahouse isn't a café where one can drink tea instead. Have a look at the asian region and it's tea tradition which is a lot older then the western european cafés. An asian might as well propose to use amenity=teahouse cuisine=coffee for a café -- malenki 20:06, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
    • teahouse is 茶楼 in Chinese and çay ocağı in Turkish. --katpatuka (talk) 05:27, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Just mentioning here, but amenity=cafe is also quite often mis-understood. In Belgium, we call a "café" what the English would call a "pub" (i.e. no meals, and almost only alcoholic beverages are sold). Then, we call a "tearoom" what the English would call a "café". Those establishments mostly serve coffee, tea and small dishes and deserts. --Sanderd17 (talk) 13:07, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

WOW. Another one of those everlasting discussions where nothing happens or is ever finished. You just have to love OSM for that. In total amenity=teahouse has 30 uses in total. cuisine=teahouse has 177 uses in total. In short: people are already using both and it would be a good idea choose one. --TBKMrt (talk) 11:42, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

tea_house instead of teahouse

BTW: Wikipedia redirects teahouse to tea house --katpatuka (talk) 07:46, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

It's the other way round now --TBKMrt (talk) 02:52, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
Hey you're right :D - redirection changed again in October 2017‎ --katpatuka (talk) 04:43, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
