Proposal
This proposal has been abandoned in favour of traffic_sign=variable_message
This proposal aims to allow users to tag variable message signs (also know as matrix or dynamic message signs), often seen on highways or other major arterial roads. These are permanent structures which often provide destination information and timings, warnings about upcoming traffic or collisions, etc. This does not include the European "Dynamic Route Guidance System".
Rationale
Variable message signs are often used to display information that is of interest to drivers travelling along a given road. When not in use, they may display generalised information such as road safety campaigns, however when in use, they can display important information such as details about accidents further along a road, information about road closures, timings to reaching a destination, etc. This may be useful in navigation applications to show a user where information is avilable whilst driving along

Tagging
highway=variable_message_sign
This tagging was chosen as it is similar to the tagging of other signs, but is open to further change.
Applies to
A node on the roadway where the sign appears (tagging the base of the sign is likely not useful)
A way that spans multiple highway=* ways where the sign is relevant to multiple ways, drawn along the length of the sign (usefulness of this is debatable, further feedback is required).
Rendering
No rendering for osm-carto.
