step_count gives the number of individual steps for a way tagged with highway=steps.

Rationale

This information is especially useful to individuals who are handicapped or injured. When navigating a map and planning a route of travel, an individual who is handicapped or injured may be able to climb a limited number of stairs, but not be able to climb an excessive number of stairs. By adding information about the number of stairs, we are enabling individuals with handicaps or injuries to be aware of the properties of a set of stairs and select their route of travel accordingly.

This suggestion follows the spirit of the proposals steps small and steps large but allows more detailed information than the rather arbitrary distinction between large (>10) and small (≤10).

Examples

highway=steps
step_count=6
width=5

highway=steps
step_count=23

Rendering

This will most likely have no effect on rendering of most maps. A very detailed rendering could include this value as a number on or near the steps.
