A Jause (also Jausenbrot, from the Slovenian južina for lunch or mala južina for snack) means a small snack in Austria - similar to the Brotzeit in Bavaria, the Vesper in Swabia and Franconia, the Marende in South Tyrol and the Swiss Znüni. However, restaurants also offer small meals under this designation. A "Jause" is often also used as a synonym for "dinner" with rather cold dishes. The Jause is usually a salty-savory snack; however, there are also sweet variants, for example, a cake snack in the afternoon.
The Jausenstation is an eating place to stop for a snack. In the mountains it is sometimes called "Jausenhütte" which is located in an hiking area. Among other things, the Brettljause is offered there - a hearty bread meal, where various hearty meats and sausages such as pressed sausage, blood and liver sausage, bacon, smoked meat, Jausenwurst, ham and cold pork nernes with garnishes such as horseradish (horseradish), mustard, cheese, pickles, puszta salad are served on a wooden plate.
