Cellphone tower disguised as

  • tank
    • water
  • plant
    • pine tree
    • cactus
  • pole
    • church cross
    • flag pole

Technologies (LTE, 5G, ...) sounds like nonsense

The tower can broadcast whatever depending on the configuration of the wireless provider. --CBRS (talk) 15:12, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

I added this section to document current use of tags. Given the fact that hundreds of mappers around the globe make use of these tags, there seems to be some need for them. I also don't see why this is "nonsense" - sure, the operator can change what they offer - but so can any shop owner and we still tag the kind of shop and don't call it useless. Actually, it's not just "configuration" (like a software switch) - the whole hardware differs depending on the technology offered. --Mueschel (talk) 16:35, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
Not "what ever", and knowing what is in use (with communication:5G=yes or similar tags makes sense. If you don't want to add this information, just don't! I came here looking for the correct wording for communication:4G+=yes which is in use but Osmose doesn't like the + in the key. I would suggest quite the opposite: list all the major in use variants Taginfo : communication:*.--Nospam2005 (talk) 19:45, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
I’m not sure what you mean here. I work in telecommunication and tower sites are configured to provide services based on market plan. The site has the capability to broadcast from HSPA+ to mmWave all in one. If you want to know what your local carrier uses, you should call the customer service or view cellmapper instead of adding information here. It is basically misleading by adding specific network mode to individual tower because a tower site may have multiple carriers. —CBRS (talk) 01:33, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
I also worked in the mobile phone industry but it has nothing to do with that. What you say is true, a single tower may be shared between telecom carriers and virtual telecom carriers may even get only a subset. It doesn't mean the information has no value, you may want to know what capabilities has the mast you're close too. And then choose a specific carrier. So simple case, one carrier. Complex case, a mast shared by several carriers. Here the "solution" is to add a note. Better than nothing but there is a possible clean solution: instead of yes, give a list of providers, similar to Key:post_office#Postal_Service_Providers. So for the given example:
communication:3G=BOUYGUES TELECOM;SFR;FREE MOBILE
communication:4G=BOUYGUES TELECOM;SFR;FREE MOBILE
communication:5G=BOUYGUES TELECOM;SFR
communication:microwave=BOUYGUES TELECOM
As it's open data in France, it can be harvested from time to time to keep data up-to-date. --Nospam2005 (talk) 22:08, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

"4G+" is also known as LTE-Advanced, so instead of using "4G+" as an attribute, we could use "LTE-A", but not everyone knows what is LTE-A.. Fraetech (talk) 20:21, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Are you sure? I have seen "4.5G" to be more widespread for LTE-A, in the manner of 3.5G for HSPA. Worse, at first LTE in the market doesn't meet IMT's 4G requirement technically. It's a good reason to not use these arbitrary numbered generations used for theoretical understanding of the meta. Focus on the tech spec. ---- Kovposch (talk) 09:00, 7 November 2021 (UTC)

Many towers

There are many towers or panels on a roof. Do we map the Ground truth or Roof truth: each one, or pick one in the middle to represent all, and add some count=10 tag? Jidanni (talk) 20:52, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
