Mission
The purpose of this project is to provide transparent information to the OSM community on the deprecation/discard decisions of the iD project via wiki documentation, automated statistics, and visualizations. By increasing transparency, we hope to:
- Increase awareness by mappers and communities alike of iD deprecation decisions.
- Inform mappers of the process for disputing these decisions.
- Provide resources to track progress by communities that choose to replace deprecated tags via automated or mechanical edits.
A deprecated feature is tagging that is recommended by OpenStreetMap community consensus for removal and replacement with other tagging. While tagging can become deprecated via multiple community-driven mechanisms, this project focuses on iD deprecation decisions because:
- It is used by 80% of mappers and is responsible for 30% of edits to the map, and it is the default in-browser editor used on openstreetmap.org. As a result, iD has considerable influence on mapper behavior, especially with newer mappers who are less likely to be involved with community discussions regarding tagging changes, and are more likely to regard iD deprecation notices as authoritative.
- The maintainers of iD are appointed by the OpenStreetMap Foundation.
- Decisions by the iD maintainers are subject to the OpenStreetMap Foundation's Software dispute resolution panel.
