Track map of Hurricane Irma of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. The points show the location of the storm at 6-hour intervals. The colour represents the storm's maximum sustained wind speeds as classified in the Saffir–Simpson scale (see below), and the shape of the data points represent the nature of the storm. This track however does not show the full extent of areas that have been severely impacted, which extends to more than 100 km from the track.
Animated satellite view of Hurricanes Irma and Jose between 2 and 9 September.

2017 Hurricane Irma Response is an activation of the Humanitarian OSM Team to provide map data to assist the response to this hurricane that devastated in 2017 the Antillas starting on 5 September. This is an ongoing disaster.

One of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic - is travelling through the northern Virgin Islands and towards Puerto Rico after passing a string of small northern Caribbean islands, impacting civilians and infrastructure. The storm is one of three hurricanes in the Atlantic basin, the first time in seven years there have been a trio of hurricanes at the same time in that part of the world. Please see the storms path through the link to NOAA's website.

The hurricane has already severely impacted the islands of Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Sint Eustatius and Saba, Saint-Barthélemy, the French and Dutch parts of Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands. It should have already impacted the eastern and northern coasts of Puerto Rico. It will soon impact the northern part of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the northeastern part of Cuba, the Bahamas, and Florida.

As damages have just started to be evaluated, coordinated efforts will soon concentrate on the first areas impacted on September 6, so further work may be needed. An initial concern was that Irma was followed after a few days by a second Hurricane, Jose, that could have reache the small Antillas to the East, however it remained on the Atlantic and is now static to the East of US. But now follows Hurricane Maria which started to hit the same areas on 19-20 september (with severe damages in Dominica) and evolved in less then 12 hours from Category 1 to Category 5 when reaching the Lesser Antillas (and will continue its track to Virgin isalnds and should land over Puerto Rico. Follow the situation report from Humanity Road!

Mapping

  • You can contribute to the response via the internet by tracing buildings, roads, waterways, etc. To react rapidly to support humanitarians deploying, we need a lot of contributors for remote editing. Visit the Missing Maps beginners section to get started.
  • Please choose from highest priority first. Pre-disaster situations should be simple to complete fast, just validating the essential missing infrastructures. Post-disaster mapping could require much more work and more complex planning of emergencies, but will require newer specific imagery source.
  • Generic instructions on how to use the Task Manager and map roads, buildings and waterways can be found here.
  • For experienced mappers, information on validating the tasks can be found here.

Areas being covered by projects in Tasking Manager can be seen the uMap.

Data access

Anyone can use OSM data for free under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) as long as OSM contributors are credited. Exports of the OSM data for affected areas of Hurricane Irma can be downloaded from the Export Tool and the Humanitarian Data Exchange platform. Datasets are being published through the Export Tool as mapping projects are being completed on the Tasking Manager. Please check back frequently for new datasets listed in the table above.

Coordination

This activation in response to Hurricane Irma is being lead by the following individuals:

You may also chat with HOTOSM on Slack: discussions are archived and don't require a permanent connection.

HOT

When there is a humanitarian crisis, OSM volunteers from around the world rapidly digitise satellite imagery to provide maps and data to support humanitarian organisations deployed to the affected countries. HOT coordinates that effort, partnering with relief organisations to focus map editing on the places most in need, providing maps with the footprints of buildings and roads quickly, so humanitarians can locate people at risk and deliver goods and services to the areas that need them most. HOT helps to bridge the OSM community and the humanitarians.

Emergencies such as this put a tremendous strain on OSM resources, particularly our servers and software. Your donations help keep OSM's systems operating in top form.

HOT also need your donations, to help funding humanitarian mapping projects and development/maintenance of systems such as the Tasking Manager and Export Tool.
