Rationale

I've been tagging post boxes using amenity=post_box, but it would be really useful to add some extra data about the post box, mainly the collection times. You often want to find the latest collection time in your area. Systems vary dramatically between countries. It may not be possible to come up with a tagging structure that can be truly global. The UK mainly has single daily collections Mon-Sat at the same time in the week, different time on Saturday.

This is the initial proposal:

 post:collect_monfri=18:30
 post:collect_monfri=13:00
 post:collect_sat=14:00

The above example suggests there are two collections Mon-Fri (1pm and 6:30pm) and one collection on a Saturday (2pm). This format would allow for any number of collections each day. There may already be a more suitable namespace for this. Also there needs to be some discussion on the time format, could the colon break certain parsers splitting up a namespace? It could be 18:30, 18h30, 1800, 6:30pm, 6h30pm etc

Discussion

  • In Germany there's no delivery on sundays, so there's no collection on saturdays. But nearly all boxes are emptied on sunday, so please add that. -- Fröstel 13:10, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
  • As always in OSM we should allow the mapper to capture more information if he wants to. So how would we deal with multiple times a day? Separation by commata(,) or semicolon(;), slashes(/)? -- Fröstel 13:10, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Sent to mailing list: In the UK they generally say "Last Collection Mon-Fri 6pm" (regardless of how many collections they'll actually do) and bellow "A later collection is at 7pm (hour or 2 later) from blah blah". Can someone upload a photo of such a post box notice? - LastGrape 23:47, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

New Proposal

As this proposal has obviously never gone from Draft to Proposed, I have created a new one:
