A  Market cross is a (mostly) stone cross that marks the location of the market in a mediaeval town, irrespective if the town still exists or not. They are often built on a base of concentric steps to be visible from afar in the mediaeval streetscape. Some of them have been moved to safer locations due to road improvement schemes or other reasons.

In lost villages/ towns, only the base may survive.
