Proposal on (multiple) plug types

I propose to use unified tagging for plug types with EV charging stations where multiple plug types per facility are not rare - plug:type=yes (eg. power_supply=yes + plug:cee_7_4=yes + plug:cee_17_blue=yes. Joosep-Georg 22:18, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

In developing countries, this tag can be used to tell if a health facility, school, etc, have electric supply or not. I would add this to the uses list.--edvac (talk) 01:14, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

I would like to add an integer value instead of just yes to tell the number of sockets if known. I took this photo and this would be plug:cee_17_red=2 + plug:cee_7_4=2. So the value yes would mean there is an unknown number of sockets of this type and an integer would tell how many if known. But I am not sure how to handle voltage and currency maybe there's need of plug:cee_7_4:voltage or a set of voltage like 400/230 here in Europe. For currency it might be interesting to differ cee_17_red in its multible sizes (16/32/63/125 ampere). Because this might be a valuable information for users if they can use/charge their device without adapter. -- Deus Figendi (talk) 09:30, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

These would be great, it would be nice to have a proposal for this Bkil (talk) 13:22, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

amenity=charging_station use socket=* and not plug=* Marc marc (talk) 11:31, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

is USB a power supply ?

I would say YES, here is why :
Bus stop in Paris now [embed an USB plug]. This can be considered as a power supply type. And then, we can add the key power supply to these amenity.
Hellopierre (talk) 11:01, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

I would say say as well. Chrabros (talk) 11:40, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Yes, that would be useful. Bkil (talk) 13:20, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

USB is definitely a power supply. It has a standardized plug, a defined voltage, and a negotiable charging current. There are now major manufacturers for installation material that offer USB sockets integrated in their mains sockets, or within the same design line. --Polarbear w (talk) 13:50, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

Also it is common to see such USB charging stands in designated areas of malls. Such a box usually houses various proprietary phone charging connectors as well along standard micro-USB (note that there exist several standard USB sockets and plugs as well). Somebody should probably revive and actualize this proposal, as people have already started to use it in the wild: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Device_Charging_Station Bkil (talk) 14:40, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

Individual sockets vs power supply service

How is it proposed to distinguish between individual power supply sockets, and amenities that offer power supplies as a service? For example a campsite or a bus stop can be a single node with power_supply=yes to indicate the availability of a power supply, but on a campsite you could also draw the individual sockets as nodes.--Pbb (talk) 13:20, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

Who invented key:socket?

  • I couldn't find a proposal about it
  • The values are a mess and not compatible with ones listed here
  • The key choice is poor. It should be at least something like power_socket:*=*, because sockets could be used for anything.

I think it come with amenity=charging_station, proposal from 2011 here. Although name might have be chosen differently, it is about decade too late to do something about it now, and it does seem to have few advantages compared to power_supply=*:
  • possibility to specify multiple available types
  • defining number of available socket for each type is included in definition
