Usage on nodes

TagInfo suggests that this tag is not very common on nodes, and certainly much less common on nodes than highway=bus_stop. So, in trying to map with compatibility with both public transport versions, is it correct to use it on nodes? --Fernando Trebien (talk) 18:24, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Over 10% of highway=platform features are mapped as nodes so this should be considered an option, for example when there is no aerial imagery or good GPS traces available to precisely map the centerline or boundaries of the platform as a way or area. --Jeisenbe (talk) 15:02, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

What about adding light, audio info, WLAN, timetable or real time info as attributes? --Efried (talk) 13:24, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

Platform 2 is a name

Because of the revert could you explain why "Platform 2" is not:

  • the most obvious name of the feature, the one that end users expect to expose in a label or other interface element.
  • the most prominent name on a sign posted on the feature itself, especially for a feature in the built environment
  • the name of the feature on a sign elsewhere, such as a fingerpost
  • common or official usage, especially for a feature in the natural environment (from Key:name)

What do end users expect to expose in a label or other interface element if not a name like "Platform 2"? Pawcio (talk) 08:09, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

It can be argued that it is highway=platform with ref=2 Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:18, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
  • So what are the arguments for ref=2? Does it add a bigger value than a name? What if some rail networks have unique reference numbers for all platforms within the network? Pawcio (talk) 13:31, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
OSM doesn't self reference the object's description. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Names#Names_are_not_for_descriptions. Using ref=* allows renderers to add 'Platform' if they wish, & even make it language specific. --DaveF63 (talk) 22:16, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
  • OSM does self reference or does describe an object if it is an actual name - there is nothing in the name definition that forbids self referencing or descriptive names. "However, actual names referencing location of object are fine, as long it is actual name. For example the way Central Park Tennis Center does include "Central Park" in the name, because "Central Park Tennis Center" is the tennis center's actual name" https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Names#Names_are_not_for_descriptions . So I ask again which of the name definitions I listed above "Platfrom 2" doesn't meet?
There are even 2nd streets". Are you going also dename them? If not why to treet street names different from platform names?
"Internal features to a named area should only be tagged with a name when they have a commonly-used local name, or some other indication (such as signage) of the feature's name." https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Names#Names_are_not_for_descriptions . Haven't you seen any indications of names like "Platform 2"?
How extra work, needed in every render to render platform names as ref, is an added value? Who does have what benefits from this? Pawcio (talk) 07:43, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
