It is not a proper waterway

excuse me: waterway=fuel sounds really odd in my ears! Is there a photo somewhere which shows this kind of waterway?--katpatuka (talk) 07:21, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

It is an amenity found along a waterway and serving water based users. Check the UK canal maps for similar uses of the waterway tag. Separating the tags keeps boat fuel stations from showing up and mixing with land based fuel stations. Brycenesbitt (talk) 07:40, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
If it is an amenity I'd then rather call it amenity=boat_fuel or similar - or at least waterway=fuel_station. Otherwise it sounds like water=fuel! ;-) --katpatuka (talk) 09:22, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
It's a long tradition on OSM that highway, waterway, aeroway and railway don't only include the actual ways but also other things which are quite exclusive to this type of transportation.--Jojo4u (talk) 12:35, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
I second @Katpatuka:'s comment here. Depict it as tradition isn't an excuse to issues it causes. It should be refined before it gets more usage as to not clutter waterway=*. The key doesn't only relate to transportation, it's more about hydrography. Fanfouer (talk) 07:30, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
