Note that these discussions mostly relate to lists we used to maintain on the UK page before these were tidied away to other pages in March 2007 (old version March 2009) for example the list of UK towns by postcode. Hence it's now best to use the talk pages for these.

Motorway Sections of A Roads

I've made the motorway sections of A roads into a separate project, mainly because we are getting quite close to completing the Motorways and its always nice to be able to say that something has been completed. 80n 19:41, 22 Dec 2005 (GMT)

Wiki tables not scalable

I'm not convinced that using wiki-tables will scale very well for this job. In my spare time I am toying with a better solution that might cope with 1,000ish roads x 300ish countries + lots of towns and cities. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. 80n 19:42, 22 Dec 2005 (GMT)

Creating status pages uses templates to make the source a bit easier to read. Are you thinking of something better, like a database auto-generated from gazeteers? Ojw 20:30, 19 Jun 2006 (UTC)

Yeah we need something more compact. The current approach is too big on the page. If you look atWikiProject Germany/Places, for one thing they've got the places list on a seperate page, which seems sensible. Also they've done away with any images. Just listing place names. Maybe even better would be to keep the tabular format but do away with images, and any extraneous text, to make it all single text rows per place.

It might be nice to make lots of red wiki links to city names, to invite people to set up a mapping project (wiki page) for their local city.

Another idea I had was to use Image:Placeparty.png or some other slicing and dicing scheme, to divide up the UK into more manageable areas to be coordinated on seperate wiki pages.

If one wanted to divide the country up into manageable areas then I might suggest that the OS National Grid offers a ready-made solution. Frankly, however, I think postcodes are better understood by the general population and possibly fit in better with the areas people tend to frequent. Longwayround 10:00, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Ordering Cities and Towns

Yesterday I added Canterbury, as I'll create a page for that any time now, however, it's not easy to see what's already listed as there doesn't seem to be much consistancy in the ordering. I'm happy to redo things so they are but don't want to trample on toes. Is the preference to go for one of:

• order by postcode?
• order by town name?

I guess tightening up on the names these pages get might also help.

yeah, it started sort of alphabetically but then some are working by postcode. Since we may have more than one contributor working on a particular city I think perhaps the postcode method is best. Almost three years later, I would second the postcode-ordering. In that way, it would become clear whether someone is mapping (for example) the whole of a city or just a part of it. Longwayround 09:23, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Reorder by County?

Why don't we reprder by county? So... wiki project kent has canterbury in it etc? Then this is a list of counties and a few major cities for fun?

Is 'Cities and Towns' needed anymore'?

Just wondering if the sub heading 'Cities and Towns' on this page is needed any more? Since there are now categories Category:UK cities Category:UK towns for both of these these. Dmgroom 11:30, 17 Aug 2006 (BST)

Wikipedia Wikiproject on King George's Fields

Help, please. Not sure how to set this up here. I have a Wikipedia Wikiproject on King George's Fields which I would like to encourage folks here to work on, too. But I have no idea of the protocols here to set this us as a link from this area. I'd appreciate either a blow by blow instruction, of a kind soul to help set it up. new bypasses etc

here are some recent major road openings and news. thought it would be good to collate these so we can try to keep on top of this sort of thing.

• Hawkinge bypass in Kent opened on the 9th July, 2007
• Goss More A30 bypass in Cornwall opened 11th July, 2007

• High and Low Newton A590 bypass in Cumbria, started construction in 2006, to be opened early 2008?

• Rugby western relief road in Warwickshire starting construction 11th July, 2007
• Earl Shilton A47 bypass in Leicestershire starting construction in autumn 2007, for opening late 2008

• upgrade of final section of A74 to M6 near Carlisle, started in 2006, opened 5th December 2008?

detrunked

I had the following in the Key:highway article, but it is UK specific. It's based on what I found in the talk page. --Korea 12:39, 21 August 2007 (BST)

Some roads that were legally classified as trunk roads have been "detrunked" and are no longer designated by the government as trunk roads. These roads should still have the tag highway=trunk.

renaming the "WikiProject" pages

There's a discussion here Talk:Wiki_organisation#Page_Name_conventions.2Fguidelines where I talked about why the "WikiProject" prefix is unnecessary page naming cruft. I'm not about to start tackling that problem by renaming this page because it's named in line with all the other worldwide country-level wiki pages, but...

We have bunch of pages linked from here such as "WikiProject United Kingdom Motorways" which I'm planning to just rename as "United Kingdom Motorways". The "WikiProject" prefix makes the page names longer for no great benefit. Some pages United Kingdom Tagging Guidelines

I thought about whether I should go step further and shorten them to, for example, just "UK Motorways". However in the global wiki context the "UK" acronym will not necessarily be known by everyone, we should set of precedent of using reasonably descriptive names for the global context. For example if someone were to use the two letter zip codes of every american state e.g "AZ motorways" I would suggest these are not good global wiki page names. Likewise if someone made a page about Ukrainian language translations called "UK Translations" things would get confusing. With that reasoning in mind, I suppose I will also rename two pages:"UK Retail Chains" and "UK Road Relations" to the longer form, bringing all into alignment.

Also agree. But note that depending on pages, we can already find redirects from/to names with or without the "WikiProject" prefix. Some redirects from the unprefixed names will have first to be reversed, or deleted in order to place the shorter name. I would suggest to leave "Wikiproject" as the category name with 2 letter prefix, and shorten the article name without "Wikiproject", adding only 2 letter prefix. --Władysław Komorek (talk) 12:30, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

Been thinking on the slash "/" in the name. It is essentially a single-inheritance top-level category. I believe these should generally be avoided as there are many ways to categorise a page (using Wiki categories). It may be good to use 'United Kingdom/Motorways', etc. to denote 'any page that is specifically about the UK (...and hence the UK community is responsible for)'. Very few pages are currently under 'WikiProject United Kingdom/' e.g. WikiProject_United_Kingdom/Parcel_Lockers. At least one is in a different top-level WikiProject_Power_networks/Great_Britain. Many pages are '... in the United Kingdom' so that the main subject 'Roads'/'Riverways'/'Travel' is the first thing mentioned and they can be listed in alphabetical order.
