I just announced this template at Talk:Wiki#Template:KeyPrefixDescription. --Push-f (talk) 09:53, 18 July 2022 (UTC) (permalink)

(That article has been archived: See Talk:Wiki/Archive_9#Template:KeyPrefixDescription) --Chris2map (talk) 07:32, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

Broken page

What is wrong with Pl:Key:ruins:*? Top of infobox is broken ([[Namespace|PrefixPomóż przetłumaczyć na polski!]] ruins:*) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 12:48, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Oh, that was missing translation. Not really clear but I added translation Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 12:50, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

No link to data item

For example Key:abandoned:* has a link to the data item Item:Q6178 in the left menu "Data item" but there is no link in the infobox under the description like we have for keys and tags. This means that in other language versions, like DE:Key:abandoned:*, there is no link to the corresponding data item at all because other languages don't have this link on the left. maro21 22:41, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

There is an example of how a link to data item could be added to the description box that I recently made: See Sandbox (permalink). What do you think? --Chris2map (talk) 07:18, 18 May 2023 (UTC)
I don't see a link. maro21 20:03, 18 May 2023 (UTC)
Right on top of the image. --Chris2map (talk) 20:31, 18 May 2023 (UTC)
Aaa, there. I hadn't noticed. Can it be in the same place where it is in the Key- Value- and RelationDescription- templates - that is, after the description? maro21 21:03, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
I chose the place and text form because I look for a general solution for the item link. The pencil links with the description are helpful to keep aligned the descriptions but are no adequate item links, IMHO. We just got familiar with those small links to the data items due to the lack of another offer in the description box. Because the data item link is no tool or external link, I didn't place it at the bottom, either. I could add a pencil like link behind the description but I think this would be wrong because there would be no comparison done between description from page and from item in background task and therefore it would look like matching content even if the description entries differ. What do you think? --Chris2map (talk) 17:51, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
Up-to-date permalink to sandbox --Chris2map (talk) 08:16, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
Why would there be no comparison done between description from page and from item? Wouldn't that be useful? --Hufkratzer (talk) 11:11, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
Because someone would have to program it. True, it would be useful! But this is another issue. For now, templates KeyPrefixDescription and KeySuffixDescription don't use the Module:DescriptionFromDataItem which does the comparison for the key and tag description boxes. At the time when key prefix and key suffix descriptions were seperated (see Talk:Wiki and Proposal) it was the easier way and no one was there to integrate it to the module. --Chris2map (talk) 11:57, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
Hm, why? Aren't KeyPrefixDescription and KeySuffixDescription just a copy-paste of KeyDescription template with some cosmetic minor changes? maro21 20:03, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately there is nothing to copy from template KeyDescription except for the "invoke" of Module:DescriptionFromDataItem. In order to get it to walk, the module needs to be taught what a key prefix and a key suffix are. That isn't a quick affair, at least to me. I started with it but can't tell if I can handle it, for now. --Chris2map (talk) 17:08, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
Ah, ok, I get it. I thought you wanted other design for prefixes and suffixes and but there is a problem with the module. So you can add this link. It's better than no link. maro21 22:50, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response... I prefer to have the link as pencil icons, like it is for other sister templates for tags, keys and relations. I use them very often to correct descriptions between the article and the data item. And what do you mean by "the pencil links are no adequate item links"? maro21 20:03, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
I simply ment that it is not obvious to me that behind the edit pencil of a description text line there is the link to another page and another item thing. That doesn't mean that we can't still hold on to the pens we're used to and continue to use them (maybe in addition). --Chris2map (talk) 17:08, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

Interim solution for a data item link (black pencil) was added to Template:KeyPrefixDescription and Template:KeySuffixDescription by me till sometime Module:DescriptionFromDataItem will be made able to take it. --Chris2map (talk) 09:02, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

Using Module:DescriptionFromDataItem

The template now uses the Module:DescriptionFromDataItem like {{KeyDescription}} and {{ValueDescription}}. So data item links and maintenance categories are enabled. For now, the module doesn't really processes the prefixes as prefixes. It is simply tweaked so they could be processed as keys:

| type = key-prefix
| key = {{{prefix|}}}:*
| prefix = {{{prefix|}}}
