Contents

Completion

Routing  Status unknown. Check if the object is present on the map and how complete it is, then update status accordingly.
Routing  Missing. This status can also be used when only insignificant details are mapped (e.g. only the first 50 m of a 3 km piste).
Routing  Partially mapped. A somewhat significant portion of the object is mapped.
Routing  Mostly complete. Use this when the majority of the object is mapped and you can tell exactly how much is missing.
Routing  Complete. Use this when you believe the object is mapped completely and the essential tags are there; add a comment and sign it using --~~~~.
Routing  Confirmed. When you encounter an object which someone else has signed off as Complete, and you have confirmed it is mapped completely, has all the necessary tags and is correct, use this status and add your signature.
Routing  Does not exist. This can be useful for demolished lifts, abandoned pistes etc. - that way mappers who haven't been back in the area will be less likely to map things which no longer exist.

License Status

Shows how much of the object is likely to survive the ODBL switchover. This is merely a rough indicator as the final decision on what will be considered to be fully under ODBL has not yet been made.

The aim is for every object to reach "green" status before the ODBL switchover scheduled for April 1, 2012. To do this, you can:

State 0/4  Data Loss. The creator has not (or not yet) accepted the Contributor Terms and the object cannot be licensed under ODBL. It will most likely be deleted after the ODBL switchover.
State 1/4  Data Reduction. The first version of the object is licensed under ODBL, but some later versions, or some versions of its constituent objects (nodes of a way, members of a relation) may not be. After the ODBL switchover, expect some loss of information: tags may disappear or change their value to what was in a previous version, nodes may change position or a way may be missing some nodes.
State 2/4  Minor data reduction. Same as above, but the information lost will be minor: e.g. the majority of nodes of a way, including the first and last, will remain and the shape of the way will roughly be preserved; or only some less important tags (e.g. aerialway:capacity=* will be lost.
State 3/4  Safe. All versions of the object and its constituent objects (nodes of a way, members of a relation) are licensed under the ODBL. Removal of non-ODBL data will not affect this object.

Getting Information and Avoiding Pitfalls

Signage differs from valley to valley as pistes and lifts are managed by different operators.

A good source of information on a lift are these information signs, which can be found at many lift stations (this example is from Val Thorens):

3 Vallees lift ref.jpg

The number in the top left corner can be used for the ref=* tag. The number is frequently found in Val Thorens and Méribel, sometimes also in Courchevel (here it has been covered with the 3V logo on some signs). In Les Menuires it appears to be unused. The number is composed of a letter denoting the valley (B for Belleville, i.e. Val Thorens and in theory also Les Menuires, C for Courchevel and M for Méribel).

This sign also reports the value for aerialway:occupancy=* (in the bottom left corner). Caveat: for group cable cars/gondolas, this is the capacity of the whole group (persons per cabin × cabins per group). The example above even generously rounds 3×33 to 100.

If you're used to the piste numbers used elsewhere (Austria, Italy): these are not in wide use in Trois Vallées. Pistes are usually referred to by their name and piste markers show only that. Les Menuires has signs like these at most lifts:

3 Vallees ref.jpg

These show piste numbers (whereas in Val Thorens they don't), but collisions are possible (e.g. 92 is assigned to two different pistes). Méribel has similar signs where pistes fork, but not everywhere.

Don't get fooled by the numbers on these signs...

Les Chamois 10.jpg
Les Chamois 09.jpg
Les Chamois 08.jpg

...this is not the piste number but a signpost number, which counts down to 1. If you report an accident, you can give the signpost number to the Ski Patrol so they can find the site of the accident more easily. For mapping purposes, however, when you encounter a sign with number 1 on it, you know that you are near the end of the piste - this is useful at intersections because you know the rest of the way has a different name. Also, the sign number is a rough indication of how much further the piste continues from that point on.

An exception is Méribel: here piste numbers are actually reported on these signs (as a small number next to the name). This is not the case everywhere, and the sign number is still present (and more prominent).

Names are tricky: French spelling and pronunciation are only loosely coupled (if at all), to the point that even native speakers get confused. As a result, finding different spellings of the same name is not uncommon. To complicate matters further, accents are dropped when writing in upper case (Bruyères becoming BRUYERES), and most signs use the upper case. Try to figure out which spelling seems predominant, and when in doubt, use the one with the highest rate of accents.

It seems the three valleys didn't bother to check whether a particular name was already in use in another valley: Each valley has a piste named Crêtes and a lift named Stade. Val Thorens/Orelle even has two pistes named Gentiane(s), with both spellings used interchangeably for either.

For quality checking: The French Wikipedia articles wikipedia:fr:Les Trois Vallées, wikipedia:fr:Courchevel, wikipedia:fr:La Tania, wikipedia:fr:Méribel, wikipedia:fr:Les Menuires and wikipedia:fr:Val Thorens have the number of lifts, pistes and cross-country tracks. They are sometimes erroneous (as you can see in the tables) but should do as a rough indicator of quality.

Lifts

The table below shows the numbers of lifts per type and sub-resort (as listed on French Wikipedia for the 2010/2011 season). Note that Wikipedia lumps funitels and funiculars into one category, while on OSM a funitel would either fall into the aerialway=gondola or aerialway=cablecar category. Since there are no funiculars in Trois Vallées, they are not an issue here. The discrepancies between total and the sum of individual figures may be lifts which don't fall into any categories (rope tows, magic carpets etc.) or plain calculation errors. Also, it is not clear whether lifts consisting of multiple sections are counted as a single lift or one per section, and whether lifts mainly intended for access to quarters are included in the count.

Bottom line: numbers are to be considered indicative figures; the actual count in the list may well differ in either direction.

Resort Cablecars Funitels and funiculars Gondolas Chair lifts Drag lifts Subtotal (calculated) Others (calculated) Number of lifts
Courchevel 1 0 9 20 29 59 3 62

A cabin size of 160 is announced outside, but the sign posted inside the cabin reads 142 for "marche 2 cabines", 130 for "marche 1 cabine" (suppose that means 1 or 2 cabins being fully occupied) - I therefore tagged aerialway:capacity=130 as I expect that to be the most common operating mode. Pistes

Pistes per difficulty and sub-resort (as listed on French Wikipedia for the 2010/2011 season; the figures for Les Menuires-La Masse are from an advertisement in the resort, seen in the 2010/2011 winter season).

How the figures were obtained is unclear: official maps do not list some of the pistes which are marked on the ground and vice versa, so counting named pistes may give different results. Les Menuires has some pistes which have different numbers for the top and bottom half, though both have the same name. It is also unclear whether the figures four Courchevel already include the pistes in La Tania or not.

Bottom line: numbers are to be considered indicative figures; the actual count in the list may well differ in either direction.

Resort Black Red Blue Green Total Calculated Nouvelles glisses
Courchevel 10 38 44 27 120 119 3
La Tania 1 3 3 1 8 8 0
Méribel 9 23 36 8 76 76 2
Les Menuires (incl. La Masse) 6 24 35 12 77 77 2
Les Menuires - La Masse 3 5 3 11
Val Thorens 8 27 25 8 68 68 2
3 Vallées 33 119 135 48 335 335 9
(calculated) 34 115 143 56 349 348 9

Pistes in Les Menuires

Includes St. Martin de Belleville. Pistes in the La Masse area are marked with an asterisk (*). Compared to the figures above, some 13 pistes (5 blue, 8 green) are still missing in the list. The missing green ones may be located next to the beginner lifts/magic carpets.
