The tag hazard_prone=* was proposed to be used for any type of feature (although preferably areas) which is located in a zone prone to natural hazards such as floods, landslides, rockfalls, avalanches, etc. It was proposed that the determination of such zones might be from official sources, or it might be subjective or based on anecdotes:

  • "Geomorphological analysis"
  • "Analysis of past events (registries...)"
  • "Local knowledge ("There is a landslide on this zone almost every Spring", "My father told me that there has been a huge avalanche that destroyed a few houses here when he was a child"...)."

Due to the unclear definition of this tag, database users should not expect it to refer to a particular level of risk, though locally it might be used consistently in some regions. It is extremely difficult for mappers to precisely determine the spatial extent of a potential hazard or the annual risk level.

The main aim of this tag was to support Disaster Risk Reduction programs and activities in technically less advanced countries, where such information was not systematically available. However, prior to mapping features subjectively in this way, consider: "what would I think if a mapper from another country added a tag suggesting that my house was in a floor or landslide risk zone? Would I appreciate this, or perhaps consider it unreasonable and unhelpful?"
