protect_id is the former identifier used along with the boundary=protected_area tag to classify (parts of) areas with a similar type of protection. Because "_id" is "misleading" (the term "ID" often implies a unique identifier that would refer to a specific protected area rather than a class of protected area), a new key was launched: protect_class=*.
