Proposal

The proposed key route:type=* can be used as an extra tag for example for cycling, MTB, inline skating, horse riding or hiking routes, but also for touristic car routes. In Central Europe there are a lot of cycling and hiking networks, especially in tourist regions, where there are also a lot of thematic tourist routes. If they were tagged with route:type=tourist/connection it would be easier to distinguish between them.

If necessary, the tag values could be expanded to more differentiations.

Rationale

At the moment it is not possible to distinguish between cycling or hiking routes that are part of a network and thematic tourist routes. While tourist routes are already completely planned with one particular route, networks are there to help people planning their own routes or detours from tourist routes. With this extra tag services like Waymarked Trails or OpenCycleMap could render the different types of routes in different ways and highlight tourist routes or make different layers for each. At the moment tourist routes get lost in the crowd of network relations when both are mapped.

Examples

When route networks are mapped it gets very confusing:

In this example at the Upper Rhine the tag is already used:

This scenic road uses tourism=yes, which could be replaced by route:type=tourist :
