South China Sea is a sea in the world at latitude 13°30′00.00″ North, longitude 110°00′01.44″ East.

Major features

The main feature of interest within the South China Sea is the South China Sea Islands, consisting of three archipelagos of islands, submerged reefs, and shoals:

These features are all disputed territories. Contributors are expected to follow the on-the-ground rule. Violations of this rule have in the past required the intervention of the Data Working Group. OSM does contain data on multiple countries' territorial claims in the region, but according to the on-the-ground rule, only de facto boundaries are shown on the default map at osm.org. It is the responsibility of OSM-powered websites and applications to display the appropriate set of names and boundaries to their users based on the additional information contained in OSM.

Things to do

A group is being assembled to work on a neutral assessment of all the objects of interest within the South China Sea to provide an amenable representation of things in the region. This includes moving towards a consistent tagging scheme between all the features both in terms of the different names by locale and also of how they are represented (e.g. reef, shoal, island).
