ScanEx, also known as kosmosnimki, have given the OpenStreetMap community access to a layer of satellite imagery, the IRS for full use in the project. This was announced 3 December 2009 at the Conference "Earth from space", held in Moscow. Agreement will be signed in the near future, but you can trace right now. IRS covers almost the entire territory of Russia and even captures a bit of Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. The claimed resolution is 6 m per pixel.

You also have the option to 'Fade Background'

Alternatively you can switch to this view while editing as follows:

  1. Press button in the bottom-left corner (Set options, choose the map background)
  2. Select 'Custom'
  3. Enter the tile URL: http://irs.gis-lab.info/?request=GetTile&layers=irs&format=image/jpeg&z=!&x=!&y=! in the window near 'Custom'
  4. Press "OK" and watch Кosmosnimki background appearing.

How connect kosmosnimki.ru to JOSM

  1. Run JOSM (from version 3715, stable from 3878).
  2. Switch on "Imaginery preferences":
  3. Press F12 or menu "Edit" - command "Preferences".
  4. Menu "WMS/TMS"
  5. Select "+ add new WMS/TMS (Add imagery URL)".
  6. Insert strings in "Menu name":
SCANEX RU
  1. Insert strings in "WMS URL":
scanex:irs
  1. Press button "OK".
  2. Add new background layer "SCANEX RU"

Congratulations! Now you can start tracing the imagery.
