This key is used in 3 ways. 1) to specify whether passengers are carried on a railway route, with values yes / no 2) to specify the extent which is served by a passenger railway route with national / regional / suburban / local / etc. 3) Rarely, as an access key for water based transport, with yes / no / designated

It is a property tag added to a primary feature tag: railway=* or route=* mapped as ways or relations.

Common values

As an access key, or to specify whether passengers are carried by a train or ferry route:

To specify the extent served by a passenger railway route

Other documented values

To specify the area served by a passenger railway route:

  • passenger=urban - "large city scale" passenger rail, may overlap with local and suburban, less common
  • passenger=national;regional;etc - some semi-colon separated lists of values are used. These may not be supported by database users.

As an access key:

Use as access key

Please note that this key is mentioned on the access=* page as well and proposed to be used for description of legal access permissions of water based transport (e.g. route=ferry) with usual values such as yes, no, designated, therefore some conflicts might occur.
