In total there are 1.767 inhabited places in the Republic of Macedonia. The country is divided in 84 municipalities. [1]

According to [2] Macedonia has one inhabited place with more than 100.000 inhabitants (Skopje), 4 between 50.000 and 100.000, 8 between 20.000 and 50.000 and 9 between 10.000 and 20.000.

However, in the Republic of Macedonia there is a law[3] defining which places are towns. Hence the places that are classified as towns should be tagged as such.


Naming conventions

The name tag should be used in the following way: 

name = Cyrillic for Macedonian toponyms
int_name = transliteration, including ascended character where appropriate.

For transliteration from Cyrillic to Latin characters:

Ѓ, ѓ Ǵ, ģ (not Đ, đ like in Serbian and Croatian)
Ж, ж Ž, ž
Ѕ, ѕ Dz, dz
Љ Lj, lj or Ĺ, ĺ
Њ Nj, nj, or Ń, ń
Ќ, ќ Ḱ, ḱ (not Ć, ć like in Serbian and Croatian)
Ч, ч Č, č
Џ, џ Dž, dž
Ш, ш Š, š 
name:en = English name/translation (where it make sense) or transcription using only English language characters (i.e. ASCII, no ascended letters)
name:xx = translation to specific language (i.e. name:de Mazedonien for the border, etc...)

When mapping, you should stick as much as possible to the 'reality on the ground' principle, i.e. as much as possible put the ground labeling (as observed) for a place in the name tag. This principle will help in resolving any dispute about possible naming issues.

An example for naming of the town Krushevo:

name=Крушево

int_name=Kruševo

name:sq=Krusheva

name:tr=Kruşova

name:gr=Κρουσοβώς

What is done?

To Do

  1. How to name cities with non-macedonian majority. Shall majoritie's language be used?
  2. Type/color of national and/or major roads (i.e. what is trunk road, what is primary road, etc...)
  3. Macedonian cadastre agency [1] has some high definition aerial images (ortophoto) which are accesible to public in Macedonia. They have defined terms of use of the data for derived commercial work. We need to investigate (i.e. ask) if any part of this data can be used, under terms (CC 2.0) of OpenStreetMaps, as basis for overlay drawing, i.e. derived work. The terms published on the page (in Macedonian) are:

Содржината на оваа карта е изготвена врз основа на податоците добиени со премерот од јули 2004 година. Копирањето и/или печатењето на оваа карта за комерцијални цели, без дозвола од АКН е забрането.
