Executive summary

Ice cream shops are already mapped but there is no standard way. This proposal wants to standardize the way ice cream shops are tagged as amenity=ice_cream.

Current use

As of 2010-09-01, there are about 475 amenity=ice_cream [1] and about 211 shop=ice_cream [2].

Rationale

This proposal suggests amenity=ice_cream for the following reasons:

How to tag

amenity=ice_cream is used for all places that sell (only or mainly) ice cream ready to eat.

The place must be permanent, that is it should be a shop, a kiosk, a stall or anything similar; anything which moves, like ice cream vans, should not be mapped (semi-permanent vans could be mapped as well).

Here is a photo that we could use in Map Features.

Usefulness

It should be expected that ice cream shops are not shown on Mapnik, however they could be shown on specialized maps like OpenCycleMap or any other map which is geared towards tourists / pedestrians / hikers. Can be used by 'on the fly' renderers like OpenStreetBrowser.
