Summary

This proposal aims to rationalise and expand tags that describe power=generator features. It rolls together several proposed new tags, and changes to existing tags.

The aim is to provide a flexible framework to encompass:

This should allow us to distinguish between a solar photovoltaic panel producing electricity and a solar thermal panel producing hot water; between a gas-fired combined-heat-and-power (CHP) station and a simple gas boiler.

N.B. this proposal takes "power" to include all forms of energy generated, which are typically electricity, heat and cooling.

Source of energy

This tag describes the source of the energy generated.

Suggested values:

burning energy water energy nuclear energy wind and sun energy

generator:source=

  • Bahnpirat-power source-biofuel.svg biomass
  • Bahnpirat-power source-biofuel.svg biofuel
  • Bahnpirat-power source-biofuel.svg biogas
  • Bahnpirat-power source-coal.svg coal
  • Bahnpirat-power source-gas.svg gas (natural gas)
  • Bahnpirat-power source-oil.svg oil
  • Bahnpirat-power source-waste.svg waste
  • hydro (river or lake)
  • tidal (near the coast)
  • wave (under the sea)
  • geothermal (warm water)
  • osmotic (from the difference in the salt concentration between seawater and river water)
  • 2020 stBN powergensource nuclear.svg nuclear (fission or fusion)
  • 2020 stBN powergensource wind.svg wind
  • 2020 stBN powergensource sun.svg solar (electricity or hot water by sun)
  • (others)

This will deprecate power_source=*.

Type of energy generated

This tag describes the type of energy that the generator outputs.

generator:output:electricity= yes
generator:output:hot_water= yes
generator:output:hot_air= yes
generator:output:cold_water= yes
generator:output:cold_air= yes
generator:output:compressed_air= yes
generator:output:steam= yes
generator:output:vacuum= yes
generator:output:battery_charging= yes

Output rating

This tag describes the output capacity of the generator (i.e. not the actual measured output). The default unit, unless specified, is Watts.

generator:rating:electricity= x / x W / x kW / x MW / x GW Watts of power generated
generator:rating:hot_water= x / x W / x kW / x MW / x GW
generator:rating:*= x / x W / x kW / x MW / x GW

This will deprecate power_rating=*.

Method of generation

This tag describes the technical process or method used to convert the energy source into the energy output.

generator:method= combustion Burning the fuel
fission Nuclear fission
fusion Nuclear fusion
thermal Using heat (e.g. from the sun)
pumping e.g. using geothermal heat
photovoltaic Using photovoltaic cells
gasification Gasifying the fuel, then burning it
anaerobic_digestion Breaking the fuel down with microorganisms in the absence of oxygen
pyrolysis Decomposing the fuel at a high temperature in the absence of oxygen

This would deprecate existing values for power_source=* where they combine the source and the method, e.g. power_source=photovoltaic.
