Рекламный тотем обычно представляет собой прямоугольное устройство шириной около 1 метра и высотой 6,5 метра (до 8 метров). Обычно устанавливается на входе в место, где ведется коммерческая или промышленная деятельность, чтобы оповестить об этой деятельности. Это разновидность рекламной вывески. Расположенный на земле, он может быть освещен и анимирован с помощью цифровых цен, к примеру, для автозаправочной станции, что является весьма распространенным типом рекламного устройства (монументальные и штендерные вывески могут быть классифицированы как рекламные тотемы, если они достаточно высокие).
